Weightless Shine as advertised?
This was gifted to me by my mother in law. Aveda is not a brand I’d personally pick for myself, due to the high price point. Plus, seeing as I have a pixie crop, my hair care routine mainly consists of conditioner, followed by shampoo (yes, I do things in reverse), followed by some gentle blow drying. Only sometimes do I want a smoother blowout than usual, which is when I would whip out this bad boy.
What it is: A leave-in anti frizz hair serum. Can be used on both dry and damp hair. Aveda’s website advises the following:
Work a small amount of product in hands and smooth evenly over dry hair to tame flyaways and add shine. May also be used on damp hair for smoothness and shine.
TL;DR: Too heavy for my fine, thin, pixie crop.
Ingredients: As per company website quoted above – Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Dimethiconol, Phenyl Trimethicone, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Tocopherol, Fragrance (Parfum), Limonene <ILN27010>
So just looking at the ingredients list, I cannot say I am impressed or that the ingredients justify the price by any means. :[ The first 5 ingredients are all silicones, which are beneficial or at least non irritating, but they are also not very expensive. Then we have some inexpensive oils and fragrances. Lavender and Limonene can be irritating when applied on skin, so if I were you, I’d be sure to apply this to the ends of my hair only and I would make sure to stay far away from my scalp, ears and forehead.
Size/Quantity: 100 ml – which, honestly, is not a very big size for a hair product in my opinion, especially if you have long hair.
Price & Availability: This is available on- and offline. On the website, this retails for US $ 30. Pricey!
Opinion: I first tried using this on dry hair to tame some flyaways and quickly found it much too heavy, as it made my hair look greasy.
I then tried using it on damp hair, which did work a bit better and did not weigh my hair down as much.
I still found that it was not suited to taming flyaways when I had my hair freshly chopped off, as it meant that the product would be distributed too closely to the hairline and roots, oiling up my hair throughout the day.
I had the most success on days where my hair was relatively long and still damp from shampooing it. I found it a bit of a fuss to work with though and I was glad once I finished it.
In my opinion, this is much too expensive for what it is, which is cheaply available silicone plus some fillers, oils and perfumes. Personally, I will not be repurchasing as I find it much too heavy for use on myself. My husband shaves his head so unfortunately I was not able to trial this on a long haired person, though I do believe that this could work very well on people with curls or long hair which needs weighing down.
Then again, I believe you can find similar things at the chemist’s for a fraction of the cost. I cannot honestly recommend this based on my experience. :<
