Western vs. Korean Makeup Setting Sprays SMACKDOWN :D (+ my favourite setting spray hack!)

feat. So Natural (All Day Tight Makeup Setting Fixx, All Day Glow Makeup Setting Fixx), Pishabit (Pposhop Fixer) & Essence (Glow To Go, Instant Matt)

Previously, I talked about how I have stopped using setting powder altogether, instead opting for a shiny, glowy look. I still like to increase the longevity of my base makeup though by setting my makeup prior to leaving the house though! A long time ago, I talked about Wake Make, which you can read here if you like.

As I have no firm favourites – more on that in a second – do let me know any setting spray favourites of yours in the comments.

EDIT: I just read Lab Muffin’s post on how setting sprays work. Go on, have a read because it’s great!

She noted that there are basically two types of setting sprays, those that remove powdery residue and those that form a shield kind of like hairspray does.

Judging from her post, it would appear that none of the setting sprays below are true setting sprays in the sense that that contain polymers. Only Glow to Go contains some but they are far down the ingredients list.

I’m guessing that the fixing power derived from the fact that they are all chock full of plain alcohol. But let’s get into the reviews!

So Natural – All Day Tight Makeup Setting Fixx

Ingredients: Water, Polyester-5, Alcohol Denat., Propanediol, Phenoxyethanol, Polyglyceryl-2 Oleate, PEG-60,Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Octyldodeceth-16, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Ethylhexylglycerin, Fragrance(Parfum), Panthenol, Sodium Benzoate, Alcohol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Centella Asiatica Extract, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Fruit Extract, Achillea Millefolium Extract, Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Artemisia Absinthium Extract,Gentiana Lutea Root Extract, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Extract, Potassium Sorbate

Size/Quantity: 75 ml

Price & Availability: This is available at both Olive Young and Lalavla. The regular retail price is ₩16,000, I got this one for ₩11,700 on sale.

Opinion: Make no mistake – you’re basically spraying alcohol and water on your face. This never broke me out though and it did a pretty decent job of keeping my makeup on. It did feel a bit like hairspray especially if I got it on my hairline but it didn’t bother me personally.

What I didn’t like was how quickly this finished or how the nozzle was kind of janky. I ran out after only a few weeks (2 or three perhaps) and the nozzle sometimes sprayed a nice fine mist and sometimes big drops – and no, it was not clogged. The nozzle came off all the time! I’m not planning to repurchase.

The ingredients list appears to be identical! Unless they have different proportions of ingredients, this looks like one and the same product, just marketed differently.

Lazy much?? 🤷‍♀️

Size/Quantity: 75 ml

Price & Availability: This is available at both Olive Young and Lalavla. The regular retail price is ₩16,000, I got this one for ₩11,700 on sale.

Opinion: I did think they were very similar as I was using them. As above, this kept my makeup on ok and my skin was fine, I just did not like that this finished so quickly and that the nozzle did not always cooperate. I’m not planning to repurchase this one either.

Pishabit – Pposhop Fixer

Ingredients: Unable to find ingredients listings online, please comment with a link if you have one.

Size/Quantity: 100 ml

Price & Availability: This is available at Lalavla. The regular retail price is ₩16,000, I got this one for ₩14,000 on sale.

Opinion: This one has got to be one of the worst I have tried, ever. It never ever sets, staying on top of your skin instead like a greasy film of cling wrap. The moment you spray it on, you feel as though there’s liquid silicone on your skin. It felt suffocating and anxiety inducing. Will not be repurchasing.

Essence – Glow To Go

Ingredients: AQUA (WATER), GLYCERIN, ALCOHOL DENAT., SYNTHETIC FLUORPHLOGOPITE, ISONONYL ISONONANOATE, MICA, ACRYLATES COPOLYMER, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, TIN OXIDE, SODIUM HYDROXIDE, PHENOXYETHANOL, PARFUM (FRAGRANCE), ALPHA-ISOMETHYL IONONE, LIMONENE, CI 77891 (TITANIUM DIOXIDE).

Size/Quantity: 50 ml

Price & Availability: This is available at Lalavla. The regular retail price is ₩5,000, I haven’t seen this on sale.

Opinion: This on its own is VERY GLOWY, see photos. I personally like it but it might not be for everyone. The nozzle can sometimes dispense too much, leading to weird pearly patches if you’re not careful though.

As you can see from the ingredients list, we’re basically talking alcohol with water – again, this did not irritate my skin or break me out, which is a relief. It set my makeup well and kept it from smudging – great for the price point. actually!

For some reason, one 50 ml bottle of this lasted me much longer than a bottle of 75 ml So Natural – go figure. I would repurchase.

Essence – Instant Matt

Ingredients: AQUA (WATER), PROPYLENE GLYCOL, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, ENANTIA CHLORANTHA BARK EXTRACT, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, OLEANOLIC ACID, PHENOXYETHANOL

Source: cosdna

Size/Quantity: 50 ml

Price & Availability: This is available at Lalavla. The regular retail price is ₩5,000, I haven’t seen this on sale either.

Opinion: This is a bit plain on its own, and I would not classify it as super matte going on, either. Surprisingly, this does not contain as much alcohol I had expected it to.

It set my makeup okay and again, at a great price point. I would get this again on its own as it lasts me quite a while.

My Hack

Honestly, I’m embarrassed calling it a hack, but perhaps this could help someone??

Currently, my preferred setting spray is…. drumroll… mixing the two Essence sprays together! I empty them in a container, let them mix and then fill the mix back into the spray bottles. Let’s have a look:

Final Thoughts

Given the value for money ratio, Essence will have to do for now as they performed best in my opinion. If you do however have something else to recommend, let me know in the comments! 🙋‍♀️ I would love a recommendation for a shimmery one in particular.
