Recent Sheet Mask Empties (Mediheal only)

As I was going through my recent sheet mask empties, I noticed that a lot of them were Mediheal masks. Thus, I decided to dedicate a post to only Mediheal mask empties. I have eight in total, here are four for the time being, with the other four coming up in a future post.

In this post, I will talk about the following Mediheal sheet masks:

  • W.H.P. White Hydrating Black Mask EX (brightening)
  • Meience Tofu Milk Mask (soothing)
  • Vita Lightbeam Essential Mask EX (brightening)
  • Meience Natto Gum (pore elasticity)

In my opinion, Mediheal makes the best affordable sheet masks locally available in Korea. Are there better options out there? There certainly are – Dr Jart’s sheet masks are more effective, in my opinion – but when you’re on a budget and don’t want something that’s completely crap, Mediheal is where it’s at, in my opinion.

In my mind, the brightening effects of the sheet masks below are in most part due to the deep hydration levels rather than any amazing skincare science or special ingredients, so do take my words with a grain of salt. Plus, to be completely fair, I should have probably tested all masks several times per week over the course of at least a month, seeing as skin has a 28 day turnover. Do also note that sheet masks are more of a biweekly treat for me – I don’t rely on them to fulfil my skincare goals.

Rather, I enjoy using them for their cooling effects and I like how they render me relatively helpless for short stretches of time. I have lots of hobbies that I like to pursue and I am a little obsessed with keeping my flat clean and minimalist a la Marie Kondo, so sometimes I just have to force myself to take a break and be nonproductive. Sheet masks (as well as painting my own nails) help me meditate better and force me to slow down when all I want to do is learn more Korean, more hanja, more coding, clean the flat, do the laundry, etc.

What are your affordable sheet mask recommendations? Let me know in the comments. For now, let’s check out these sheet masks.

Mediheal – W.H.P. White Hydrating Black Mask EX

I got this following a rave review by K-beauty Blue which you can refer to over here. This was an alright mask to use, definitely one of the better ones and I would definitely consider repurchasing. It normally retails for ₩3,000 but you should be able to get it for ₩1,500 at Lalavla as they go on sale all the time.

Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Niacinamide, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Triethanolamine, Carbomer, Allantoin, Euterpe Oleracea Fruit Extract, Methylparaben, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Disodium EDTA, Xylitylglucoside, Anhydroxylitol, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Fragrance, Propylparaben, Xylitol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Arbutin, Phenoxyethanol, Mineral Water, Charcoal Powder(0.125mg)

So yeah, butylene glycol and glycerin for hydration, niacinamide for skin brightening. Extra points for a relatively short ingredient list. The fragrance did not irritate my skin and the addition of several sweeteners (xylitols) seemed to me to help with hydration levels.

What the company says

A mask with activated charcoal contains natural castor oil and fruit extract, it cleanses & brightens skin. When environmental toxins, dirt, and debris get under your skin, its waste-filtering system gets jammed, pores get clogged, and skin looks cloudy. W.H.P White Hydrating Mask nutrition extract brightens skin tone to create bright and clean skin. Activated charcoal acts like a magnet, it draws out deep-dwelling pore-cloggers by exfoliates and adjusts skin texture smoothly. Contains Niacinamide, Arbutin, Acai berry extract, it helps to even skin tones. Ceramide aquaseal (Xylitylglucoside , anhydroxylitol, xylitol) can whitens your skin. Black Charcocal Mask sheet has infrared function, smoothes and brightens skin.

My thoughts

The fit was really good – snug and tight, no bunching up around my chin or nasolabial folds – and the mask itself was rather brightening and moisturising. This is me before and while wearing the mask:

The mask adhered really nicely but I smell bullshit when it comes to the whole ‘drawing out impurities through activated charcoal’-part. That seems a bit far-fetched and I don’t think is true. It is a very nice moisturising mask though as you may be able to see for yourself. I would definitely consider repurchasing this one for its hydrating and soothing effects. Skin felt calmed down and smooth.

Mediheal – Meience Tofu Milk Mask

Tofu milk, I hear you say… so basically soy bean brine? I guess so. In terms of fit, this was not as good as the WHP mask mentioned above. Broadly speaking, this mask was ok in the sense that it was hydrating and my skin looked a bit brighter afterwards, however nothing stuck out as special to me about this mask in particular. I got it for ₩1,500 from Lalavla, a pretty standard price for a drugstore face mask here.

Here’s what I looked like wearing the mask:

As you can see, the material is rather luxe and soft and felt lovely on. The chin area bunched up a little for me but it felt good going on.

Water, Glycerin, Propanediol, Niacinamide, Dimethicone, Glyceryl Stearate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Xanthan Gum, Glycosyl Trehalose, Ceteareth-20, Carbomer, Disodium EDTA, Arginine, Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Panthenol, Trehalose, Betaine, Polyglyceryl-10 Stearate, Cetyl Palmitate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceteareth-12, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Zeolite, Polysorbate 80, Allantoin, Adenosine, Amodimethicone, Myristic Acid, Pentylene Glycol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Hydroxide, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclotetrasiloxane, Lactobacillus Ferment, Lactobacillus/Soybean Ferment Extract, Bifida Ferment Filtrate, Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate, Pinus Sylvestris Leaf Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Juniperus Mexicana Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Pogostemon Cablin Oil, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Oil

Wow, a lot more ingredients this time! Again, a bunch of moisturising agents such as glycerin and sodium hyaluronate as well as brightening ingredients such as niacinamide in this one but also lots of thickening agents and ingredients to make the texture feel thick and rich, such as dimethicone and xanthan gum. Looks alright to me.

What the company says

– Contains Tofu Milk Complex (lactobacillus/soybean ferment, lactobacillus ferment, bifida ferment filtrate, saccharomyces ferment filtrate) to provide moisture, soothing and energy

– Protein Milk Care Essence Formula for powerful nourishment

– Soothes and energizes sensitive and tired skin exposed to external stimuli

– Three-layer embossed sheet made of bamboo increases the delivery rate of the essence

– Dual-functional cosmetics with brightening and wrinkle reduction effects

– Tear open the bottom of the pouch to use the remaining essence

My Thoughts

I don’t know why but nothing about this mask was memorable in any way about this mask. It was nice, it moisturised and hydrated, it brightened thanks to the hydration, but for some reason I have not been drawn to repurchase in the slightest. I cannot say anything negative about this mask except that perhaps, this did not wow me and that I know of other sheet masks – including Mediheal ones – that have left me much more impressed than this one.

Just for reference, this is my mug the morning after. Skin looks rested and I cannot fault it really. Don’t know what it is.

Mediheal – Vita Lightbeam Essential Mask EX

Okay, so this was advertised as a brightening mask. Did this mask deliver?

I know what you might be thinking.

Girl, you are one of the whitest shades of Caucasian white and yet you want to brighten your skin?? How deluded are you?

But hear me out. I feel that skin brightening is beneficial to most, while skin lightening is a whole different kettle of fish really. I have lots of acne scars and continue to battle with breakouts as you can see on my photos. I enjoy skin brightening effects as I feel it helps my skin look healthier overall, as well as camouflage my adult acne.

This mask was in fact a bit cheaper than the other ones as it cost ₩1,000 only at Lalavla when it was on sale.

Water, Glycerin, Propanediol, Sodium Hyaluronate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Xanthan Gum, Carbomer, Panthenol, Trehalose, Betaine, Disodium EDTA, Butylene Glycol, Boswellia Serrata Resin Extract, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Hydrolyzed Collagen, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Beta-Glucan, Niacinamide, Calcium Pantothenate, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Pyridocine HCL, Maltodextrin, Sodium Starch Octenylsuccinate, Silica, Allantoin, Polysorbate 80, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Arginine, Tocopheryl Acetate, Fragrance.

Again, lots of hydrators like glycerin but also some skin soothers like panthenol and aloe in addition to some thickeners like xanthan gum, silica and sodium starch derivatives. Looks ok to me too. Some fragrance toward the end but to me, the mask smelled of very little.

What the company Says

Lightening care components such as vitamin C, tocopheryl Acetate, and γ-oryzanol will change your skin even shinier and brighter as caring dark and shady regions more intensively.Use of the cellulose mask sheet with silky touch fitting even your fine wrinkles aids intensive care and delivers the efficacy of the high-concentrated essence more mildly.

My Thoughts

Do you see what I see? Yeah? I thought so too. NOTHING. I do not feel as though this mask made any difference whatsoever. It was not bad, I just don’t see any improvement in hydration, texture or tone. At least it did not irritate my skin and for that, I am grateful enough. I will not consider buying this again as I felt that it did not help with any skin concerns that I had.

Mediheal – Meience Natto Gum

Natto is one of those Japanese superfoods that I just cannot bring myself to enjoy. While I love Korean fermented soybean soup, 청국장, I just can’t help but despise natto, while my husband loves it. He guzzles down a few packets a week along with miso soup, hot steaming rice, seaweed and kimchi!

I got this mask for ₩1,500 at Lalavla Korea, again. The mask itself felt very luxe and soft on the skin, though it did bunch up under the chin area just like the tofu mask above did. It appears as though the packaging and mask of these two Meience masks are the same, so no surprises there.

So here’s butylene glycol for hydration and niacinamide for brightening, dimethicone and starch for thickening and skin feel, panthenol for soothing. Do note there are also some potentially irritating ingredients such as essential oils toward the bottom.

Water; Butylene Glycol; Glycereth-26; Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride; Cetyl Ethylhexanoate; Niacinamide; Polysorbate 60; Dimethicone; Glyceryl Caprylate; Panthenol; Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer; Glyceryl Stearate; Glycosyl Trehalose; Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate; PEG-90M; Sodium Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer; Polyisobutene; Adenosine; Xanthan Gum; 1;2- Hexanediol.Disodium EDTA. Sodium Hyaluronate; Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside; Sorbitan Oleate; Citrus Limon (lemon) Peel Oil; Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf OIl; Lavandula Augustifolia (Lavander) Oil; Metha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil; Ocimum Basilicum (Basil) Oil; Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil; Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil; Sorbitan Laurate; Hydrolyzed Soy Protein; Natto Gum; Hydrolyzed Collagen; Yeast Extract; Hydroxyethylcellulose; Acetyl Dipeptide-1 Cetyl Ester; Bacillus/Soybean Ferment Extract; Chlorphenesin; Fragrance.

What the company says

– Customers who wish to lift their skin to provide elasticity and tension to loose pores

– Customers who are looking for a product that effectively delivers essence to the skin through excellent adhesion and essence retention ability

– Contains Pore Lifting Complex (hydrolyzed protein, natto gum, hydrolyzed collagen, yeast extract) to provide moisture and luster to skin, evening out skin tone

– Gum type essence formula that helps manage dry skin

– Manages pores and provides smooth skin texture, completing healthy and glowing skin

– Tencel and cupra sheet with excellent adhesion and essence retention ability

– Dual-functional cosmetics with brightening and wrinkle reduction effects

– Tear open the bottom of the pouch to use the remaining essence

If someone could please explain what pore lifting means or why anyone would like to have loose pores, I would be immensely grateful because it just doesn’t make sense to me.

I will have to say that I was super intrigued and fascinated by how accurately the formulation of the product was able to mimic the actual texture of natto. Natto does go leggy when you mush it between your fingers and start to pull strings, which is something I have always disliked about real (food) natto as it reminds me of how when two people snog, they will sometimes be trailing strings of saliva from their mouths as they tear apart – eugh.

My Thoughts

I’m going to come right out and tell you that I have not repurchased this mask since, nor do I intend to. My skin did not actually feel all that moisturised and it did nothing to brighten skin. My pores looked and felt as usual, too. Next!

Final Thoughts

Out of all four masks, I liked WHP (first mask) the best. It fit and adhered really well and I saw some overall brightening. It also felt really hydrating and cooling going on. As for the other masks, I was not too keen on either one of them but they weren’t terrible. I just felt that they did not quite deliver as much as advertised or as much as I expected them to.

  1. I’ve yet to try mediheal masks, I have the tea tree one (original and fine dust versions) in my stash but haven’t got around to it yet ~ Liking the new set up btw 😀

    1. Thank you! I felt it was a bit cluttered, so decided to revamp just a little.
I haven’t tried the fine dust version, only the original one. Apparently it’s one of their best sellers, but it didn’t do all that much for me personally. Looking forward to your review!
