Review: I’m from Honey Mask | Those with Less than Perfect Skin will Appreciate

아임프롬 허니마스크 (리뷰) – 민감한 피부를 가진 사람들은 이것을 좋아할테니까…?

I’d previously mentioned this mask in my skin sauna post but had not yet finished the mask at that point in time. Well, now that I have – and I have even opened my repurchase! – I figured it was high time to actually review it, especially seeing as I had a bit of a revelation while I was using it.

So first off, if your skin is great and plump already, you may not see the benefits of this mask. But then again, if you’re reading this blog, and you’re serious about skincare, chances are you have some issues you’d like to tackle or face proactively, such as acne or dry skin flakies. In which case, this mask is great!

・What it is: ・

This is a wash-off mask that you use after your cleanse. You then continue on with the rest of your skincare routine.

・TL;DR:・

Great for soothing open acne sores, plumping up fine lines as well as relieving dry, itchy skin. If you don’t suffer any of these skin issues, you may not really be able to appreciate the goodness of this mask.

・Price & Availability: ・

I got mine from my local Olive Young. It usually retails for ₩38,000 (US$32 or £25) but goes on sale regularly. I can see this going for as low as ₩24,700 (US$21 or £16) right now. That is round about the same price I paid for it in the shops.

・Size/Quantity: ・

The glass jar that the mask is housed in comes with a generous 120g of product.

Side note: A little goes a long way.

・Ingredients:・

The star ingredient in this mask, as touted by the ad copy and product info, is of course honey. Prior to this, I had not really experienced any beneficial effects from applying honey based products – e.g. read my review on Skinfood’s cult product, their honey serum, here – so I was skeptical.

If you look at the ingredients list, you’ll see lots of natural ingredients, hydrators and plant extracts. You might well experience adverse reactions, according to both Skincarisma and cosDNA. Personally, my super sensitive skin and I have never experienced any issues using this mask but of course, you are you, so proceed with caution if you react badly to plant extracts or other natural ingredients. I was pleasantly surprised to see snail mucin, an ingredient I used to love.

Honey, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Macadamia Integrifolia Seed Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Pentylene Glycol, Microcrystalline Wax, Polysorbate 20, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Beeswax, Tocopheryl Acetate, Argania Spinosa Kernel Extract, Corylus Avellana (Hazel) Seed Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Snail Secretion Filtrate, Water, Bambusa Vulgaris Water, Nelumbo Nucifera Flower Water, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Water, Propolis Extract, Beta-Glucan, Bee Venom, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Sophora Angustifolia Root Extract, Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) Flower Extract, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Extract, Punica Granatum Fruit Extract, Bambusa Vulgaris Extract, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin.

・Packaging:・

The packaging is alright in my books, albeit not travel friendly. Let’s get real though, who even travels these days?

It basically is a heavy glass jar with a plastic screw-on lid. A little plastic spatula is included. You can also use a tea or dessert spoon to scoop out the product.

If you don’t like jar packaging because you think you don’t like having to dip your fingers in, then just don’t dip your fingers in. It’s that easy! Some products just don’t lend themselves to more hygienic packaging such as tubes or pump packaging, personally I don’t mind.

・What the company says:・

I cannot find English ad copy for this mask. Perhaps it is not currently being sold overseas. On Olive Young Global, there are some promotional images which look fairly profesh. Here’s what the listing says, roughly speaking – my own translation, don’t @ me:

1. Natural Honey (38.7%) from Jiri Mountain

2. Hydration locking system that prevents your skin from drying out

3. Improves skin flexibility and elasticity, nourishes

4. Silky, glowing skin that is moist and soft and does not dry out

5. If you keep the mask on for a good amount of time, dead skin cells, sebum and whiteheads will come off.

・Consistency/Texture:・

The texture of this mask is very soft and creamy and balmy. Basically, imagine a rich moisturiser with natural honey mixed in. On skin, this is very comforting to use and it feels as though you are enveloping it in a nourishing cocoon of some kind.

・Scent:・

True to its name and ingredient list, this smells straight up of honey.

・Application:・

Due to the richness of the mask, I’d recommend that you use this at night rather than in the day but you do you I guess. If I am only after a quick little pick-me-up, I will only apply a very thin layer and leave it on for 10-20 minutes. If I have destroyed my skin (ToT)/~~~ I will apply a slightly thicker layer and leave it on for 45-60 minutes.

I also like to combine with my face sauna mask method, where you basically hold your face over a bowl filled with hot water and cover yourself with a towel.

Here’s how I would use the mask:

  • eye makeup remover [OPTIONAL]
  • micellar water
  • cleansing milk
  • foam cleanser
  • peeling gel [OPTIONAL]
  • I’m from Honey Mask
  • watery toner
  • hyaluronic acid gel
  • watery toner
  • hyaluronic acid toner
  • serum
  • gel moisturiser
  • rosehip oil OR rich moisturiser

・Efficacy:・

Let’s get to the most important bit. Does it actually work? As you might have guessed by now, yes, it works exceedingly well for me personally but obviously, and as always, your mileage may vary – take my opinions with a grain of salt.

I use this especially at times when I am breaking out badly or when I have done what I shouldn’t have done – pick at my breakouts. If you want to wake up with skin that’s somewhat presentable even after a major stress- or anxiety induced picking session, this mask would have to be my top pick. You leave this mask on for 30-60 minutes and your pimple sores will be DRAMATICALLY REDUCED once you wash it off.

True to its description, this mask is also fantastic for hydrating and soothing itchy, dry or dehydrated skin. If you have very oily skin, you might find this mask just a bit heavy. Me with my dry, acneic skin however am loving this for its ability to calm down irritated, dry skin.

Fine lines get a little plumping action and as a result, the mask takes a couple of years off my face. Can’t go wrong with that!

・Final Thoughts:・

I’d recommend this mask to people with dry, acne-prone skin who are also looking to fight the first signs of aging in particular. For these purposes, this mask works exceedingly well and I am happy to sing its praises.

If you do not share any of these concerns, the mask may not be for you especially seeing as it sits somewhere in the premium drugstore category when it comes to pricing.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

  1. Ooo you finished it!! I’ve been looking forward to this review 🙂 I liked this mask when I used the sample but I remember there being enough for only a thin layer which my skin almost drank up haha I think I’ll like it with a thicker layer and do the steaming method you mentioned from time to time. When I apply masks on facial clients I always use a steamer but rarely do it for myself because I can be a bit lazy when it comes to my own skincare, but I guess a towel over my head and bowl of hot water is quicker than setting up a steamer XD I’ll have to remember to try it out with this honey mask when I buy the full-size product in future 😀

btw I noticed you wrote that you still use the rosehip seed oil, I still haven’t tried the Trilogy one you recommended yet but I will after I finish the one I have by The Ordinary, I was wondering if you’ve ever tried that one and if they’re even comparable apart from the price difference? any thoughts?

    1. I haven’t been able to find the ordinary locally and don’t like shopping online for skincare, so I’ve been using Trilogy all this time.

Im excited to hear about your experience with the ordinary in the future! I’d love a cheaper alternative!

  2. I’ve only tried this a few times, each time expecting something dramatic to happen (since the reviews are just so good) but didn’t get much but a bit of softening after washing it off. However I’ve only left it on for 20 minutes and never longer. I definitely have to try it your way some day. Thanks for the lovely in depth review.

    1. I felt the same way as you at first. I’d your skin is ok, you won’t notice any dramatic results outside of skin softening.

Then I picked at my skin, and that’s where this mask really stood out – in terms of pimple healing power!
